Growing up, we all loved to play detective, and spy games. Why? Because who doesn’t love anonymity, mystery, suspense. Today, that same allure and power remain prevalent and evident. Most notably in our content, and especially in our content online. That is the power that anonymity holds over the power of the mainstream. Websites like The Doe that constantly post anonymous content for their readers are gaining more and more traffic because of the demand for anonymous content.
A reason why is because with anonymous content people receive the information at face value. They are not distracted or dismayed at the identity of the content provider or their bias. It is with that, that anonymous content has grown in popularity, following, demand, and supply. Another reason why anonymity has become so powerful is because of the way it sheds light on the bias of the mainstream media. Oftentimes, these anonymous content providers leverage their anonymity, to call out mainstream bias. They’re successful in their attempts because -again- readers are less preoccupied with the identity and more on the information.
Anonymous content -therefore- becomes a verifier of sorts. Through its anonymous appeal and allure, anonymous content creators are able to not only provide content detached from bias and identity but also call out the biased content that does exist and that is being peddled. As more and more anonymous content becomes available, people will gravitate towards those providing the content and become less enthusiastic about the mainstream media. We may have already begun to witness a shift in this regard.
