Early life
Kodak Black, also known as Bill Kahan Kapri, was born on June 11, 1997, to Marcelene Octave, a Haitian immigrant, in Pompano Beach, Florida. Growing up in Golden Acres, a public housing project in the same area, he began rapping during his elementary school years. After school, he would visit a local trap house to record music. To expand his vocabulary, Kodak Black read dictionaries and thesauruses in his free time. Along with his friends, he frequently engaged in physical altercations and illegal activities like breaking and entering. Due to fighting, he was expelled from school in fifth grade and arrested for auto theft while in middle school. He recalls being presented with two choices during his upbringing: “sell drugs with a gun on his hip or rap”. From a young age, Kodak Black went by the nickname “Black” or “Lil‘ Black“. When he first joined Instagram, he chose the username “Kodak Black” because of his affinity for pictures. This eventually became his stage name and a name embraced by his fans.
Songs
2009–2015: Beginnings and Project Baby
At the age of 12 in 2009, Kodak Black became a member of the rap group Brutal Youngnz, performing under the name J-Black, before joining a local rap group called The Kolyons. His first mixtape, Project Baby, was released in December 2013, followed by Heart of the Projects in December 2014, and Institution in December 2015.
In October 2015, Kodak Black’s popularity surged after Canadian rapper Drake shared a video of himself dancing to Kodak’s “Skrt” song, despite some criticism from fellow rappers such as Earl Sweatshirt. That same month, Kodak Black inked a deal with Atlantic Records. The following year, he and fellow rapper and label-mate Lil Uzi Vert announced plans to embark on a national tour called the “Parental Advisory Tour“; however, Kodak Black did not end up participating in the tour.
2016–2017: Breakout, Painting Pictures, and Project Baby 2
Kodak Black achieved notable success in 2016 with his single “Skrt“, which reached the top 10 on Billboard’s “Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles” chart. He also released his fourth mixtape, Lil B.I.G. Pac, which charted on Billboard’s “Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums” and Heatseekers Albums charts. That same year, Kodak Black was selected as part of XXL magazine’s “2016 Freshman Class”, but he was also criticized for derogatory lyrics towards dark-skinned black women in a leaked video.
In 2017, Kodak Black achieved his first top 10 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 with “Tunnel Vision“, which peaked at number 6. He also released his debut studio album Painting Pictures, which debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 and sold 71,000 equivalent units in its first week. However, Kodak Black caused controversy when he insulted fellow rappers Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty during a live stream on Instagram. He released Project Baby 2 in August 2017 and a deluxe version titled Project Baby 2: All Grown Up in November 2017, which included the single “Codeine Dreaming” that charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
2018–2020: Heart Break Kodak, Dying to Live, and Bill Israel
Kodak Black faced legal troubles in early 2018 when he was arrested following a police raid on his Florida home. Despite the setback, he continued to make music and even released the mixtape Heart Break Kodak on Valentine’s Day. In December 2018, he dropped his second album Dying to Live, which featured successful singles such as “Zeze” with Travis Scott and Offset, “If I’m Lyin, I’m Flyin“, and “Calling My Spirit“. The album also paid tribute to the late rapper XXXTentacion and peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for a week.
Kodak Black continued to release music while serving a prison sentence, including the single “Zombie” featuring NLE Choppa and DB Omerta in October 2019, and “Because of You” with an accompanying music video in February 2020. He made a promise to release an album if “Because of You” achieved platinum certification by his birthday, and on May 12, 2020, he released the single “Vultures Cry 2” featuring WizDaWizard and Mike Smiff. In November 2020, he dropped his third album, Bill Israel, while still serving time in prison.
2020–present: Prison release, Haitian Boy Kodak, Back for Everything and Cutthroat Bill: Vol. 1
In early 2021, Kodak Black dropped “Last Day In“, a single that acknowledges his pardon from then-president Donald Trump. He followed up with “Every Balmain“, which reflects on life after prison, and was featured on Lil Yachty’s “Hit Bout It“. Despite his frustration with the mixtape’s sales in its first week, Kodak dropped Happy Birthday Kodak on his twenty-fourth birthday. “Super Gremlin“, a track from a Halloween-themed mixtape, became a hit and was included in Kodak’s fourth studio album, Back for Everything, released in February 2022. Personal Life
Kodak Black expressed his commitment to education in 2014 when he revealed that he was pursuing his high school diploma at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach.
During his time in prison, Kodak Black underwent a spiritual transformation and began identifying as a Hebrew Israelite, thanks to a priest who conducted prison ministry with him. He even filed a petition to change his name to Bill Kahan Blanco, with “Kahan” being an alternative spelling of “kohen“, a term used in Judaism to refer to priests who are descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses. He successfully changed his name to “Bill Kahan Kapri” on May 2, 2018.
Incarceration did not stop Kodak Black from furthering his education, as he earned his GED in June 2018 while in prison.
On February 6, 2021, Kodak made a social media comeback with a new hairstyle and a slimmer physique. He and his lawyer, Bradford Cohen, posted a video on Twitter where they announced that Kodak would cover the tuition expenses of the children of two late FBI agents, Laura Schwartzenberger and Daniel Alfin, who died on duty. They had informed the FBI in Miami of the gesture.
However, Kodak Black’s life has not been without controversy, as he was shot during a fight outside a Los Angeles Italian restaurant, where Justin Bieber was hosting a Super Bowl-week party, on February 12, 2022.
Kids
Kodak Black, the successful rapper, is also known as “Dad” to his two children with different women. The artist is reportedly expecting a third child and has expressed his desire for the new arrival to be a boy. Although he keeps his life as a father mostly private, he has occasionally opened up about his role in interviews and on social media.
Kodak’s first child is his son, King Khalid, who is seven years old and was born during a previous relationship. The adorable little boy has made appearances on Kodak’s Instagram page, including one video where he is seen at his sixth birthday party. In the video, Kodak playfully rubs a piece of cake in King’s face, which elicits laughter from everyone around. The rapper has also shared live streams of him talking to King on the phone, demonstrating their close bond. In one instance, he even purchased a diamond-encrusted grill for his son, which King proudly showed off to his father through a FaceTime call.
Kodak’s second child is his daughter, Queen Yuri, who he welcomed with real estate agent Maranda Johnson, whom he reportedly became engaged to in December of 2021. Although Kodak deleted the Instagram post where he announced her birth, he expressed his excitement for his new baby girl in a subsequent post. He referred to her as a “Z queen” and said that she had all the missing pieces he had been looking for. He also noted the coincidence of his release from prison and his daughter’s birth happening in the same year.
In February, it was reported that Kodak would soon be expecting his third child. During an interview with Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, he commented on the mother of the soon-to-be baby, expressing his hope that the child would be a boy. The hosts and viewers were uncertain whether he was joking, but the announcement confirmed that Kodak would soon have another child to cherish.
Super Gremlin Song
On October 30, 2021, Kodak Black released “Super Gremlin“, a track included in the Sniper Gang label compilation Sniper Gang Presents Syko Bob & Snapkatt: Nightmare Babies, which is a project dedicated to Halloween. The song was later played on US urban contemporary radio starting on January 11, 2022, and managed to reach the third position on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, the track can be found in Kodak Black’s fourth studio album, Back for Everything.
Kodak Black is prominently featured in eight out of eleven tracks in Sniper Gang Presents Syko Bob & Snapkatt: Nightmare Babies, the album from rappers Syko Bob and Snapkatt. “Super Gremlin” is a standout track that has been praised by Kodak’s fans as a “return to form”. A reaction video of Kodak reacting to the song, released on December 3, 2021, by YouTubers Zias and B. Lou, gained attention for Kodak’s “peculiar” and “odd” behavior, leading to some people accusing him of drug use. However, Kodak denied the accusations via Twitter, stating that he fakes being sleepy and gets regularly drug tested. Notably, the vocal sample at the start and during the chorus of the song is borrowed from “Error”, a song by the German indie rock band How to Loot Brazil.
Back for Everything Song
Kodak Black’s fourth studio album, Back for Everything, was released by Atlantic Records on February 25, 2022. Lil Durk is the only guest artist featured on the album, appearing on the track “Take You Back”. Production duties were shared among several producers, including Buddah Bless, London on da Track, Murda Beatz, Scott Storch, Zaytoven, Boi-1da, Vinylz, and Lee Major.
Back for Everything was preceded by the single “Love & War” and two promotional singles, “Grinding All Season” and “I Wish“. The album cover art pays tribute to the Back to the Future movie franchise. Critics gave the album generally positive reviews, and it was a commercial success, debuting at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart with 60,000 album-equivalent units sold in the first week.
